Pick up almost any pack of high-THC seeds and there on the label is a number: twenty-five percent, twenty-eight, 30. It is stated with as much confidence as the seed count, and it is nothing like as reliable. The seed does not carry a percentage; it carries a potential, while the number on the pack is one record of how close to that ceiling one grower, under one set of lights, on one occasion came. Sellers such as https://potentthcseeds.com list lines carrying tested results up to 30 percent, and this article is a guide to what stands in the space between that number and the jar on your own shelf: where the figure is generated, where it moves, what the you can control and what the seed decides before it is ever in the ground.
One Plant, One Lab, One Afternoon
A THC percentage on a seed listing comes from a lab test of dried flower. A grower, usually the breeder or a contracted test grower, grew the line, chose a plant, took a few grams, and submitted it to a lab. The lab reported cannabinoid content by dry weight and returned a certificate. The number on the pack is usually the best certificate from that work, not the average.
Several things follow from this. The figure refers to a single phenotype from a pack that holds many. It refers to that plant under the test grower’s setup, which are rarely average. And it describes a sample cut from somewhere on the plant, usually the top of the best cola, where trichome density is greatest. Potent THC Seeds publishes the lab report for every stated figure, with the number of plants tested, which is 12 plants on most current lines, so the range is visible next to the top result.
Two Numbers That Look Like One
Read a lab report and the biggest number is usually THCA, the acid precursor that the living plant produces. THCA converts to THC under heat, and in the process it sheds a carboxyl group, and that takes roughly twelve percent of its mass with it. A sample showing twenty-five percent THCA holds about twenty-two percent potential THC after decarboxylation.
Seed packs state the THCA number since it is larger. Some add the small quantity of free THC on top of it without the conversion adjustment, which inflates the total higher still. Neither is dishonest, strictly; it is convention, but the practice favours the larger figure. The honest way to compare between two strains is using “total THC”, calculated as THC plus about 0.88 times THCA, and a report that gives that figure separately is a sign of something.
The Spread Inside One Pack
Grow a full pack of a tested line and the plants will not all match the label. Even in a stable line the range between the lowest and highest plant can be several percentage of dry weight, and in a loose line it can be far wider. The figure on the pack lives at the top of that spread; the majority of plants sit lower below it.
That is not a flaw of the seed, it is how seed reproduction works. Cuttings repeat a single plant; seeds sample a population. To the grower this means one practical consequence: running several seeds and selecting the most resinous female is the one way to get close to the label number reliably, and a grower that plants one seed and expects the advertised number is betting on a lottery that they did not know they had entered.
What the Seed Decides, What the Room Decides
It helps to think is as two numbers for every plant. The ceiling is set by the seed: the highest THC which phenotype can produce with ideal conditions. Nothing in the nutrient schedule, light or technique raises it. The floor is environmental: how much under the ceiling the plant finishes because some factor was wrong.
The great majority of small grows operate a long way beneath the ceiling, and the distance is nearly entirely environmental. Which means a fact the seed market rarely states: in a grower not yet hitting the ceiling of a twenty-percent line, a 30-percent line will hardly make much difference. The additional headroom stays untapped above the identical limits. Choosing higher genetics makes sense once the current ones are being grown near to their ceiling.
Closing the Gap
From the ceiling and the floor lie a handful of variables that are responsible for nearly the whole gap, and none of them is complicated.
- Drying and curing. Fast, fast drying burns off terpenes and turns THC to CBN; a slow dry and a proper cure keep the THC and the profile which makes it feel character.
- Harvest window. THC peaks when most trichome heads are cloudy and only a minority are amber; earlier it has not finished developing, past that it breaks down into CBN. A week too early or too late takes real percentage points.
- Sample selection. The lab tested the top of the best cola. Shaded buds on the same plant come in weaker; a grower comparing their entire harvest with the label number is weighing an average against a maximum.
- Plant health through flower. Nutrient mistakes, insects and environmental stress in the last weeks pull the plant’s resources away from resin production. A clean, untroubled plant finishes nearer its ceiling.
- Light intensity in flower. Trichome production follows photon delivery until a ceiling most home lamps never reach. Dim flowers finish airier and less potent regardless of the genetics.
How the Numbers Got Inflated
Some forty years ago a tested THC figure over ten percent was exceptional. Selective breeding towards resin, indoor growing and better testing moved the average number upward through the following decades, and at some point during that rise the percentage became into a selling tool.
Once buyers began choosing by the figure, sellers started producing figures: testing many samples and keeping the highest, quoting THCA in place of THC, choosing labs known for high results. Not one of these habits altered any seed. The genetics genuinely get stronger, yet the gap between the stated figure and the real result widened more quickly than genetics did. A figure of 30 percent today needs the exact same question as any other: measured how, from what number of plants, and reported as THCA or as total THC.
What the Number Stops Telling You
Here is a point the number cannot capture: above a certain level, the felt difference between gets smaller. The difference between ten and twenty percent is obvious to any user; the gap between twenty-five and thirty is often invisible under the effect of terpenes, other cannabinoids, the way the flower was cured and how it was used.
This does not make the figure useless; it makes it one input out of many. A well-grown, carefully cured twenty-two percent flower with a rich terpene range routinely feels stronger than a poorly handled twenty-eight. To a buyer choosing seeds, the useful interpretation is this: use the percentage to exclude weak lines, and after that decide among the strong ones on aroma, plant structure and breeder reputation, rather than on the final few points.
How to Read a High-THC Listing
All of the above reduces to a handful of questions worth asking to any seed pack ahead of ordering.
- Is a range shown, or just a single top figure? A range means several plants were tested; a single figure usually means one.
- Does the breeder state anything about growing setup? “At high light, cut at week ten” gives you context; nothing gives you nothing.
- Does the aroma description sound like a real plant or like a catalogue of flavour words? A breeder who has run the line knows it specifically.
- Is the number given as THCA, THC or total THC? Total is the honest one; THCA alone inflates by roughly a tenth.
- Is the testing laboratory named and the report available? Unsourced numbers are marketing, whatever they read like.
Before You Buy
Potent THC Seeds sends every order in unmarked parcels with the breeder’s packs intact inside and no on the outside to reveal the contents. Orders to the United States are not taken, as seed importation is restricted there. Seed law differs widely by country: in many places buying seeds is legal as souvenirs while germinating them is not, and in others the two are allowed under local rules or both is. Checking the position in your own jurisdiction is the buyer’s responsibility, and nothing of this article should be read as legal advice.
